Tweak on Speed Test

Hi Gents -

Following up on our conversation earlier today, is it possible to move the speed test button on the tab higher up in the window so that folks don't need to scroll down, and past all that copy to get to the actual test.  I think its a bit obscured at the moment.

When is MLAB gonna add that "choose your provider" feature?  I'm thinking we should wait to go on the radio until that happens.

Filpino outreach

Hi Gents -
Following up on my conversation with Daniel last week, I spoke with Senator Jim Espaldon this morning about getting Filipino households to complete some written surveys.  He's setting up a meeting with a Filipino association chairperson.  Should hear from him later this week or early next.

Hi Dan,
I think I would actually prefer you focus on asian and other pacific islanders.  Jay Merill informs me that the survey is skewing disproportionately towards Chamorro respondents right now and so if you could help us get some of the more under-represented groups like the Micronesians, Marshallese, Philippinos, etc, that would be great.  Military too.  We can't ignore that there is a big population in Guam that is very well served (it actually serves as a great comparison group for those who are underserved).

So, we've got the Micronesian community covered.  Now...if only the southern Mayors would engage.

Today I held a town hall in Dededo that was attended by 8 individual, (one had to leave early) and collected 7 surveys.

They breezed through almost every question except to note that they had no idea what their internet speed was.

Attached is the attendance sheet.  On the blog is a short video for documentation.

Quotes for Written Survey Printing

Hi Guys -

Ok...best price seems to be $108 for 200 sets (double-sided) and $180 for 400 sets.  Pretty good, I'd say.

Once we get the copies, I will schedule groups (some leftover from our post-poned townhalls) to administer the survey and identify those who can return 1 or 2 additional.

I know I've asked before - sorry Colin! - but the last version is THE version right?  Don't want to print a wrong one.

How was Saipan?

HI GENTS!

How are your travels?  Just wanted to update you on the Post Easter Coma here...

I've made (FINALLY) connections with the Mayor's council and they have promised to include me in their next meeting of mayors to introduce the survey to them and also the Good4Guam (speed Test) site.

I've also, ALSO FINALLY, gotten to key mentors at the Guam DOEducation, and will be doing the same.

So for the next few days I will be developing the speed test site so tha we can work out the kinks.  When we're good, I will spend time massaging key talk radio people to see if we can't "launch" it.  At the same time I will be working with agencies to have their people participate too - generally blanket as much as I can with first round networking.

Ok...back to work.

Lemme know how your trip in Saipan goes and if I can be of any assistance.

Dan

Daniel - I'm sending you an invoice for April under separate cover.

Thanks!

PS>  You have to have pastries in Saipan at a Japanese Bakery, preferably...They're a wierd hybrid of bakeries but are delicious nonetheless.

Gathering Data & Speedtest Campaign

Hi Gents -

Hope everyone had a good Easter.

So I've contacted all my remaining Town Halls for the month and have told them that we should try to get a larger group together to actually take the survey and start gathering information.  I'm very excited about that - Colin, if you can give me something that says Final on it, as we discussed, I'm on it.  I can start as early as tomorrow.  What should our Goal be?  (200, 300, 5000?)

Also, I've purchased the Website, GOOD4GUAM, and intend on using it to host the link for the online test.  My thinking is that its easier for someone to go to Good4Guam, sounds good on radio, etc., and people get it.  I'll launch it as a public service site and offer it to intitatives that need polling and quick online surveys, and the online test will be the first.

So, can you give me the link again and I'll start tinkering with a design that we can all approve?

Thanks.

Dan

Lots of good town halls coming up

Gents -

Finally - breakthroughs!

I'm conducing the first townhall in Chamorro sometime next week - have done so by reaching out to the Guam Preservation Trust.  Still working on SPIMA, the government agency that oversees the centers for the aged - I simply cannot seem to get the individual village centers (or their commissioners) to commit.  They really aren't cooperative - such was the case with the town halls re: military build-up.

The Dept of Health & Social Services contacts suggested/offered assistance in facilitating a hospitality table at their food stamp section where people wait a long time for service and could easily participate in feedback sessions.  Next week, at any rate, I'll be conducting another town hall at their venue with a group that specifically works with children/families in need.

It's going well...yeah - we're getting some good feedback.

Will post pics of yesterday's town halls as soon as I find the wire to connect my camera to laptop.

Meetings with the Man'amku

Hi Tony -

Great to speak with you today.  To recap, I am working on a federal project to create a digital map of broadband service throughout the US and the territories.  Part of that process involves creating a written survey that is built around the real life situations of people here in Guam - therefore, while we write it, would like feedback from groups such as the man'amku.

The process is short and simple.  I come in, i bring food (donuts, lunch, etc) and we sit and talk about the proposed questions on the survey - things like does internet mean a lot to you? do you use it?  if so, who is your provider?  that sort of thing...

They don't have to fill anything out, i just take notes.  And I can speak to them in Chamorro too.

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Hi Ed -

At this past Monday's lunch meeting, you referenced a WiFi service available in Tamuning and North.  Do you know what company offers it, and do you know what that service entails (modem, etc.)

Also...any word on the photographer?  We need the photos for documentation purposes required by the Feds.  Thanks.  See you Monday with the Social Service groups.

Also...can we(you and I) have a meeting with the Tech group at DOE?  I want to discuss a "I took the speed test" campaign with the kids.

Friday meetings

Today I met with 2 mayors:  Carol Tayama of Agat (South) and Roke Blas and his young vice-mayor Robert Hoffman (the two work as a team) of Sinajana (Central).  I pitched them the idea that I wanted to get a group of 25-50 people (representing the broadest spectrum of residents - young/old, poor, rich, etc.) who could participate in the outreach/written survey/and speed test and they are in.

I also met with 2 educational organizations, a magnet parochial school in Agat - Mt. Carmel (to involve their entire middle school population) and a music school, Shimbros, and they are eager to hear more.

Meeting in 45 minutes with Cesar Villanueva of GHURA.  Will update under separate entry.

SCHOOL FUNDING ELIGIBILITY SURVEY

Here's the document shared by Sen. Aline Yamashita - we discussed this when we met with her last week.

GHURA, Guam Coastal Management

I met with the above agencies today - Daniel, you might recall that we missed an appointment with one Cesar Villanueva - 671-475-1318.  Today I spoke with him and we're going to sit down sometime next week to talk.

Re: GCMP, spoke with Evangeline Lujan - 671-475-9672, their director, about featuring some presentations in their many, many outreach events involving youth.  Said yes.  Will follow-up.
